Staying naked had been Carwynâs idea, and while his husbandâs effort to remain calm had been obvious, the warrior in him had readily seen the value of it, even if the husband in him rebelled at the notion. Men were easy to distract with an enticing body, and Carwyn knew that he had one. Men had been giving him sideways glances long before they should have. Reiâs men had to be tired and irritated with their search, and the thought of sampling their kaiâs wife before carting them both back to the ship would hopefully make them think more with their dicks than their heads. If they were sufficiently distracted, they wouldnât have time to consider the wisdom of charging after him.
He could see the yawl now, populated with six men rowing over the breakers, as Aleki had predicted. And it was only the one. It took a lot of crew to man a sailing war ship, and with half the men either dead or imprisoned, the bastard Rei couldnât afford to send two or more boats after them. The constraint had bought them time to set their defenses. Carwyn could only hope that theyâd succeed. Itâs up to me.
It was torturous to wait for the enemy to first land their boat, then disembark and decide amongst themselves how to proceed. There were no tracks to follow as Aleki had deemed laying down some too obvious a ploy. Instead, Carwyn had to wait behind some trees along the most likely path for the search party to take. Swaying from one foot to the other, with hands he opened and closed hanging against his thighs, Carwyn took in deep breaths to steady his racing heart. Come on. Come on. Finally, the waiting was over. The six men started toward the edge of the jungle, five of them carrying swords and the sixth a bow with a quiver of arrows at his back. That was the one who worried him the most. Aleki had surmised that at least one of their pursuers would be an archer. The Chainers didnât use them as much as the Moorcondian army did, but they came in handy when fighting on both a ship and on land. Carwyn was fairly confident in his ability to keep ahead of these men when they chased him. Arrows were harder to avoid. It was a calculated risk. Aleki was sure that Rei wouldnât allow his men to kill them unless absolutely necessary. They were too valuable alive. But in the heat of the moment, these tired and angry warriors might take the more expedient route. There was no hope for it. The course of action had been set. Time for him to kick it off.
Carwyn grabbed the two lily fruits that heâd put by his feet, then paced forward, waiting for the moment when heâd be spotted. It didnât take long. The man leading the cohort of warriors caught sight of him and let out a cry.
